Abstract
This research explores the illocutionary act types and functions performed by the main character, Puss, in the one of DreamWorks notably animated films, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This study aims to solve two primary objectives: first, to identify the types of illocutionary acts in Puss’ dialogue using Searle’s taxonomy of illocutionary acts (assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration) and second, to analyze the pragmatic function of these acts according to Leech’s four functional categories (competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive). The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method in analyzed the utterances that contained illocutionary acts employed by the main character, Puss. The researcher collected the data by watching the film several times to understand the storyline. After that, the researcher downloaded the transcript of the film and re-watched the film to match the conversation with their context. This step was essential to guarantee the validity of the transcript text. Next, the researcher analyzed the data by only focused on identified the types of illocutionary acts and their functions performed by Puss in his every conversation. This research revealed that only four types of illocutionary acts were applied by Puss in his utterance throughout the film. The declaration acts were not found in any of Puss utterances. Puss’ utterances were dominated by assertive (37,5%) and directive (35%) acts, reflecting his leadership role and the continuous need to proclaim his status as the legendary Puss in Boots. Additionally, commissive and expressive acts, sequentially, served as third and fourth ranked in terms of frequency. Furthermore, the number of illocutionary act functions analyzed by the researcher has aligned with Leech’s conceptualization of competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive functions of illocutionary acts. Four types of Leech’s illocutionary act functions were all found in this research.
