Abstract

The current development of technology has enabled teachers and students to use it for learning, including the teaching and learning of English writing. This qualitative study aimed to explore students' perceptions of their digital competence in writing English. A total of 70 students from two classes completed the questionnaires, and the researcher interviewed 8 students to gain a deeper understanding of their perceptions of their digital competence in writing English. This study found that the majority of students at SMAN 1 Gedeg Mojokerto recognize the importance of digital competence and actively engage in digital activities to support their writing. Most students indicated that they know how to protect themselves and others from data leaks by not disclosing information publicly. Meanwhile, students assessed themselves as lacking in other competencies, particularly in creating digital content. The interviews revealed that students frequently use Google Translate and Canva to help with their writing. They use various methods to review their writing, such as checking it themselves, enlisting the help of friends and tutors, and using grammar checkers. They also protect their security by using passwords and two-factor authentication. These results underscore the importance of understanding digital literacy in supporting digital English writing skills
