Abstract

Collocation in English refers to the combination of words in a sentence. This combination of words has become common in English learning. In this research, to analyze the use of collocations in narrative text writing produced by students. This study centered on two major parts: the type of collocation employed in the created text and the role of collocation in relation to the organization of narrative texts. To examine this issue, the study used a qualitative design by analyzing students’ writings on narrative texts. The findings showed that students used five of six types of lexical collocations: verb+ noun, adjective+ noun, verb+ adverb, adverb+ adjective, noun+ verb. And they use five to six in grammatical collocation: verb+ preposition, verb+ to infinitive, verb + that clause, verb + gerund(ing) and noun + preposition. The collocations the students used in their writing appeared in various ways in each section of the narrative structures: orientation, complication, and resolution. These findings indicate that even though the usage of collocations is still simple for students, they have managed to use different collocations effectively in their English composition writing tasks. These students are able to make use of the collocations to convey narrative contexts effectively in their writing although some inaccuracies exist in the collocation form or words.
