Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Anxiety of the characters in the novel Heart of the Hunter, which served the anxiety disorders among the novel's characters. Two problems need to be solved in this study: (1) How do the anxieties occur and described inside the characters?, and (2) What are the effects of Anxiety on each character? This study uses the qualitative technique to create a clear, descriptive text. The descriptive technique is used to analyse the conversations among the novel's characters. The data were collected by analyzing and identifying the characters' conversations inside the novel. The new criticism theory is involved in this study to make the data collectively become more objective. In this study, anxiety was revealed by the novel's characters, such as the ego and superego, which are expressed by the characters inside the novel. From the existence of the anxiety inside the novel, the main character, Jamie Fier, has the most frequent occurrence of anxiety among the other characters. Furthermore, the researcher classified the characters' anxiety based on the novel's time situation.
