Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the two main characters, Celine and Bradley, in Talia Hibbert's novel Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute, focusing on how their relationship reflects the romance formula. This study aims to identify the structure of the romance formula used in the novel, as well as to analyze the dynamics of the character relationships that correspond to the stages in the formula, such as meeting, conflict, resolution, and happy ending (Cawelti, 1977). This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytical method and the popular romance formula theory as an analytical framework to analyze the plot of the relationship development between Celine and Bradley. The results of the analysis show that Celine and Bradley's relationship consistently follows the main elements of the romance formula, which are marked by emotional conflict, the process of reconciliation, and the reaffirmation of the values of affection and trust. This study concludes that this novel not only meets the expectations of readers of the romance genre, but also offers contemporary variations that are relevant to adolescent issues and family dynamics.
