Abstract
This study aims to analyze the speech styles used by the main characters in the movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The movie presents various social situations that show how characters adjust their way of speaking depending on the interlocutor, context, and certain social conditions. The primary focus of this study is to answer two questions, namely: (1) the types of speech styles used by the main characters in the movie and (2) the social factors influencing the use of different speech styles in conversations between characters. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to examine speech styles deeply and contextually. The analysis was conducted by observing the conversations of the main characters, namely Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, and President Snow, directly from the movie. To support the identification and analysis process, the researcher also used the movie transcript that had been cross-checked to match the original dialogue. The analyzed data consisted of relevant utterances supporting the research focus. These dialogues were then classified based on the types of speech styles and analyzed to examine the relationship between the use of speech styles and the social context in the movie. The results show that among the six types of speech styles, four were found in the movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, namely formal, consultative, casual, and intimate styles. The most frequently used speech style was casual because most conversations took place in informal situations and involved characters who already knew each other, such as Katniss and Peeta. Katniss mostly used the casual style, while Peeta also dominantly used this style, but in some moments, he used the intimate style with Katniss. Meanwhile, President Snow tended to use a formal style when speaking in public and a consultative style when discussing with Plutarch. The social context and the relationships between characters strongly influenced the choice of speech styles.
