Beth's desire of having her own family in the kitty johnson's five winters

This study aims to analyze the motivation and process of the main character, Beth, in Kitty Johnson’s Five Winters, in building her own family. The main focus centers on two research questions: first, why Beth desires to build her family, and second, how Beth goes about realizing her desire. The research examines Beth's inner conflict, her decisions, and the interaction between internal and external factors that influence the process. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach using New Criticism theory, which focuses on intrinsic text analysis to identify symbolism, diction, and irony in Beth's character development. Data was obtained through in-depth reading of the Five Winters text and narrative analysis to reveal the emotional dynamics in Beth's journey. With this approach, this study aims to understand the psychological and social context in Beth's process of family formation. The results showed that Beth's desire to build a family was influenced by her search for the meaning of life after a traumatic experience and the need to find identity through motherhood. The process Beth goes through, which includes adoption attempts, artificial insemination, and finally having a relationship with Mark, a childhood love she never had, reflects a complex and doubtful journey. The research found that family formation in Five Winters does not revolve only around physical mechanisms, but rather an intricate emotional and spiritual quest, leading to a deeper understanding of the role of family in individual identity.
