Majority hegemony in government policy: discrimination against minorities in the prespective of Gramsci's theory

This research explores the theme of oppression as experienced by minority groups within the novel Blackwater Falls by Ausma Zehanat Khan. The novel portrays the complex relationship between majority and minority groups in the town of Blackwater, where ideological and structural control by the majority group results in systematic marginalization of the minority. The focus of this study is to examine the forms of oppression depicted in the novel and to investigate the causes ehind such acts of domination or hegemonic. This study applies Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony as the main theoretical framework to analyze how the majority group exercises control not only through coercive means but also through ideological influence. A qualitative descriptive method is used, with data gathered through close reading and textual analysis of selected passages that depict power relations and forms of oppression in the narrative. The findings reveal that the oppression in the novel occurs through various dimensions: workplace inequality, educational system, city government, and religious community. These layers of oppression are upheld by hegemonic systems that normalize injustice through institutional influence and ideological narratives. The study further identifies that hegemonic dominance in the novel is maintained through alliances between powerful social institutions, such as the local government and religious bodies, which work together to sustain control over minority groups. This research emphasizes how oppression can function subtly under the guise of social order, making it a powerful tool for maintaining dominance in society.
