Legends as authentic materials in ELT: an intertextual study

Legends are a type of short story and are included in authentic material and can be used as literary work that can enhance student's understanding of literature lessons taught in the classroom. Intertextuality refers to the relationship between one text and another. Intertextuality awareness in the short story is successful and effective in reading and understanding the text. This study focuses on identifying the literary elements, types of intertextuality, and potential uses of the legends of Malin Kundang and Nakhoda Manis as authentic materials in ELT. This study employed qualitative study to examine literary elements, types of intertextuality, and the potential uses of Malin Kundang and Nakhoda Manis in ELT using analysis tables as instrument. The findings revealed that the literary elements in the legend of Malin Kundang and Nakhoda Manis include plot, structure, character and characterization, setting, point of view, language, style, theme, irony, and symbols. The literary elements are dominated by the architectural type with a result of 5 out of 10 literary elements. The results of the analysis can be used as potential uses in ELT for reading skill. From this study it can be concluded that the legend of Malin Kundang and Nakhoda Manis can be used as learning material in ELT for phases D, E, and F in Merdeka Curriculum. Future research can expand intertextual analysis and explore the use of Malin Kundang and Nakhoda Manis in English learning to enhance language skills and cultural appreciation.
