Figurative language used by the characters in Disney’s wish movie

This thesis aims to find the use of figurative language in the Disney’s "Wish" movie. This research focuses on the type of figurative language used by the characters in Disney's “Wish” by applying the figurative language theory proposed by Perrine and the function of language theory by Jakobson. There are two main research problems discussed in this research, they are about the types of figurative language used by the characters in the Disney’s "Wish" movie and the function of figurative language used by the characters in the Disney’s "Wish" movie. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach, which aimed to explore the conversations of the characters in Disney's "Wish" movie. Data collection was carried out by reducing data through two stages, transcribing Disney’s “Wish” movie and classifying the data obtained into each existing type. The data then presented by providing specific examples of dialogue and explaining how figurative language was used to create certain narrative effects. Each type and function was supported by relevant explanations. The findings reveal that the movie combines various types of figurative language, including personification, metaphor, overstatement, understatement, irony, paradox, metonymy, symbolism, and allegory, each of which has a different narrative purpose. This expressive use of figurative language has four main functions: emotional, to convey the character's inner struggle and engage the audience; referential, to clarify the world and context of the narrative; conative, to emphasize themes of control and manipulation, as seen in King Magnifico's orders; and imaginative, to enrich storytelling by using lively and creative images. This study highlights the significant role of figurative language in shaping the narrative and emotional depth of Disney's “Wish” movie. The diverse types of figurative language utilized to enhance the storytelling and convey complex themes. These linguistic devices serve four key functions: emotional, referential, conative, and imaginative, contributing to audience engagement, narrative clarity, thematic emphasis, and creative storytelling. The research underscores the effectiveness of figurative language in enriching the movie's narrative and delivering its intended messages.
