Abstract

This research aims to examine the traumatic experiences experienced by Rozeena in the novel Under The Tamarind Tree by Nigar Alama. This novel tells about the struggle of four friends who have different backgrounds after the partition in India and Pakistan in 1947. Therefore, in this study, the author will answer the formulation of the problem in the study, namely (1) What traumatic events experiences by Rozeena’s in Under The Tamarind Tree (2) How does Rozeena's traumatic experience affect the development of her character in the novel Under The Tamarind Tree. This research uses a qualitative approach to collect the data needed for analysis. Descriptive studies in the analysis are applied in this research to analyze quotations in the novel Under The Tamarind Tree by Nigar Alam. The researcher also uses new critical theory and psychoanalysis from Sigmund Freud to analyze the character and effects of the traumatic experiences experienced by Rozeena. The results of the study show that the traumatic experiences experienced by Rozeena began with the India-Pakistan riots in 1947, which killed her brother Faysal. Then, it became the starting point for the creation of endless feelings of guilt for Rozeena and other feelings of loss. Rozena also experienced pressure from her aunt and her family, so she experienced an emotional burden as a result of the traumatic experience she experienced, which affected the development of Rozeen's character. Both good and bad attitude. Her good attitude is that Rozeena likes to help others, and her bad attitude is that Rozeena has become a person who likes to hide secrets and finds it difficult to share her feelings with others; she also distances herself from the environment and people she loves, especially those related to her past.
