Revealing the flouting of Maxim in the character's dialogue of Knives Out 2019 movie

This study aims to analyze the types of flouting of maxim found in the movie Knives Out. This movie is about the investigation of a suspicious case of the death of a wealthy businessman. Therefore, in this study the researcher answered the problem in this study, namely: (1) How maxims are flouted behind all the character’s dialogue in Knives Out 2019 movie, and (2) How does flouting the maxim of relevance as dominant data affects the Knives Out 2019 storyline. The researcher answered these problems using a qualitative descriptive approach. This approach used pragmatic theory and Grice’s maxim flouting to obtain appropriate speech analysis data. These utterances were taken from the Knives Out 2019 movie script, which was carefully examined to obtain the needed data. The results of this study showed four types of flouting maxims found in the character’s dialogue. There were sixteen types of flouting maxims found, consisting of four flouting the maxim of quality, three flouting the maxim of quantity, six flouting the maxim of relevance, and three flouting the maxim of manner.
