Abstract

This study examines the parenting style of the Baker family and how it influenced Juli Baker's personality in Wendelin Van Draanen’s Flipped. This study has two research questions: (I) How is the Baker family’s parenting style described in the novel Flipped, and (II) How is Juli Baker's personality influenced by the parenting style in Flipped? This study applied a qualitative method to answer the problems and uses descriptive study to uncover the issues through dialogue, narrative, and conversation in the characters Robert Baker, Trina Baker, and Juli Baker in the novel Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen. The researcher used a new criticism approach as the theory for the analysis. Another theory used to conduct this research is Diana Baumrind’s parenting theory. The researcher uses the novel Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen as the primary data in this research and uses journals, books, and other articles as secondary data. This study found that Robert and Trina Baker's parenting style tends to be authoritative: showing affection verbally and physically, building interactive communication, supporting children's needs, involving cooperation, setting boundaries, and setting expectations for children. The researcher found that some of Juli Baker's traits are implementations of good examples from her parents. Juli Baker implements the good things her parents do to others, making her a kind hearted, competent, confident, sporty, and expressive child.
