Analysis of mitch's character development in mitch albom's tuesday with Morrie

The objective of this research is to examine the character development experienced by Mitch as the main character in the novel Tuesday with Morrie. This study focuses on analysis of Mitch’s character based on two points that guiding the discussions as follow (1) How is Mitch’s characterization before meeting with Morrie.; (2) How is Mitch’s characterization after meeting with Morrie. This study analyze Mitch’s character and characterization using New Criticism theory to retrieve better understanding regarding the issue. This study also applied Elizabeth Hurlock’s theory of character development. This study using descriptive qualitative method to present systematic and board analysis related to the issue proposed in the problem of the study. As the result of the study, Mitch’s character throughout the story experiencing significant changed influenced by the reunion with his professor, Morrie. Mitch’s character shifting from being restless, running fast-paced of life, distant, and reserved to be someone who contented, living slow-paced life, affectionate, and emotionally open.
