Analysis of Deixis in the Lyrics of Miley Cyrus’ Album Endless Summer Vacation

The research aimed to analyze the use of deixis in song lyrics on the Endless Summer Vacation album by Miley Cyrus. Deixis provided a specific clue about the lyrics' people, time, and placesrelated to emotional experiences. Therefore, in this study, the researcher answered the formulation of the problems, namely (1) What types of deixis are found in the songs of Miley Cyrus' Endless Summer Vacation album, and (2) How do the functions of deixis relate to the themes of the songs in Miley Cyrus' Endless Summer Vacation album. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the data. The researcher collected data by copying and reading the song lyrics carefully and repeatedly. Next, the researcher identified words or phrases containing deixis in the lyrics that had been read and listened to, using a comprehensive framework for analysis.Then, the researcher classified the data based on type and analyzed the types of deixis found and the functions related to the themes on the Endless Summer Vacation album. The researcher has found three types of deixis based on Yule’s (1996) theory in the Endless Summer Vacation album: deixis of person, spatial, and temporal. This research that deixis in song lyrics built relationships between singers and listeners and provided important context for time and place. In the Endless Summer Vacation album, the themes included self-empowerment, emotional strength, loneliness, uncertainty in love, betrayal, emotional intimacy, deep love, courage, freedom, emotional struggle, and happiness. Deixis was crucial in conveying these themes and providing in-depth information about the writer's experiences. The analysis showed that there were 82 instances of deixis. The person deixis type was the most frequently used by the singer, with 38 cases. Next, temporal deixis appeared 25 times. Finally, spatial deixis was recorded 19 times. The researcher suggested that future researchers choose objects like political pamphlets, advertisements, or even the latest albums and use more detailed theories.
