Abstract
This research analyzes the figurative language in selected songs about broken hearts in My Chemical Romance, focusing on identifying types of figurative language and exploring their meanings within the lyrics. The study aims to categorize figurative language based on Kennedy and Gioia’s (1995) theory in conveying emotional and thematic depth. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research identified and analyzed lyrics from 15 My Chemical Romance songs with a broken hearts theme. Data were collected by obtaining song lyrics from website and analyzing them for the figurative language. The types of figurative language were categorized into contradictive, correlative, and comparative groups, with specific subtypes such as hyperbole, irony, metaphor, personification, and symbolism. The findings reveal a total of 114 data of figurative language across the analyzed songs. Metaphors were the most frequent type with 35 data of figurative language, followed by symbols with 30 data and personification with 16 data. Hyperbole with 12 data and irony with 12 data were also commonly used, reflecting the emotional intensity of the lyrics. Less frequent types included allusion with 4 data, simile with 3 data, and paradox with 2 data. My Chemical Romance’s songs utilize rich figurative language to explore themes of love, heartbreak, loss, resilience, and disillusionment. Through metaphors, symbolism, irony, and hyperbole, their lyrics evoke intense emotions, painting vivid narratives of emotional turmoil, existential struggles, and the quest for hope amidst despair. These elements create a poignant connection with listeners, highlighting the beauty and pain of the human experience. It also offers a starting point for more research on linguistic components in song lyrics across various genres or topics.
