Abstract
The research examines how the main character of A Memory Called Empire, Mahit Dzmare described on the novel. This novel tells the story of Mahit Dzmare who is the ambassador of Lsel Station to doing her job as an ambassador in the imperial planet Texcalaanli. Mahit Dzmare drawn into the conflict when she left to serve as an ambassador in Texcalaanli for political urgency. Therefore, in this study, I will answer the problem formulation in this research, namely how Mahit Dzmare described in the novel. I use the theory of New Criticism in this study to navigate Mahit Dzmare`s characterization. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to obtain a clear and systematic description of the phenomenon being studied. Data was collected by reading the novel "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine, then taking the narratives and dialogues processed as data. The data is applied with New Criticism theory to identify Mahit Dzmare's characterization. The results of the study shows that Mahit Dzmare's characterization is including 6 aspects in Mahit Dzmare. Namely assertive, adaptive, thoughtful, diplomatic, open minded, and cooperative. The characterization of Mahit Dzmare dominantly described as thoughtful and cooperative characterization.
