Expressive Acts Performed by Kevin Hart on "The Secret to Success and Happiness" in Jay Shetty Podcast

This study aims to investigate the expressive acts performed by Kevin Hart on "The Secret to Success and Happiness" podcast hosted by Jay Shetty. Two research problems will be addressed: (1) What are the types of expressive acts performed by Kevin Hart on “The Secret to Success and Happiness” in Jay Shetty’s podcast? and (2) What are the functions of the expressive acts performed by Kevin Hart on “The Secret to Success and Happiness” in Jay Shettys’s podcast? The researcher use Searle’s (1968) theory. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the conversation transcript between Kevin Hart and Jay Shetty. The data were collected by first transcribing the podcast entitled Kevin Hart on "The Secret to Success and Happiness". The transcription when analyzed by identifying the type and the functions of expressive acts. Then, the researcher highlighted the data with initial codes and color. The results of the study indicate that there are six types of expressive acts used, namely expressions of thanking, apologizing, congratulating, wishing, greetings, and attitudes. The total data that was found by the researcher is 33 data. The functions of the expressive acts found are showing gratitude, regretting, praising, and accepting. Overall, Kevin Hart and Jay Shetty tend to use expressive acts to create a relaxed and familiar atmosphere in the podcast.
