Impoliteness strategy used by Julian toward Auggie in the Wonder movie (2017) from the Islamic perspective

This research aims to analyze the impoliteness strategies used by Julian towards Auggie in the Wonder movie (2017). Auggie, born with a rare medical facial disorder, struggles to adapt to his new school and needs a better welcome from his friends. The impoliteness phenomenon that occurs in the movie is reflected by Julian, who constantly belittles Auggie’s physical appearance. The research aims to answer two problems of the study: (1) What kinds of impoliteness strategies are used by Julian toward Auggie in the Wonder movie (2017) based on Culpeper’s impoliteness strategy, and (2) What is the Islamic perspective on impoliteness strategies depicted by Julian toward Auggie in the Wonder movie (2017) based on Culpeper’s impoliteness strategy.
This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to investigate the impoliteness phenomenon in Julian’s use of impoliteness strategies towards Auggie in the movie script. Data was collected from movie scripts to analyze Julian’s impoliteness strategies towards Auggie in the movie. To answer the second research problem, the researcher identified each utterance with six principles of politeness based on the Qur’an and explained the principles regarding Julian’s impoliteness strategy towards Auggie. The researcher then discussed and concluded by focusing on commands and moral messages from an Islamic perspective.
The research reveals that Julian’s most impoliteness strategy towards Auggie in the film Wonder (2017) is the negative impoliteness strategy. Julian uses negative impoliteness to attack Auggie’s negative face without minimizing it by ridiculing, insulting, and associating Auggie with negative aspects. Besides that, it was found that Julian’s utterances to Auggie violated the four principles of politeness based on an Islamic perspective. Julian’s impoliteness utterances towards Auggie mostly violate the principle of politeness in the Al-Qur’an is Qaulan Ma’rufa. It was based on Julian’s impoliteness utterances towards Auggie, who ignored his background and status, which offended and hurt Auggie’s feelings based on the principles of Qaulan Ma’rufa politeness in Q.S An-Nisa:8. Politeness and impoliteness in interactions are strictly regulated in the Qur’an, and language impoliteness is strictly prohibited. It can be concluded that language impoliteness intended to harm others reflects the speaker’s lousy personality and self-image. It is an evil act and arrogant because someone feels they are better than others.
