Abstract
In this research, the researcher examines the alteration of novels adapted into films. The researcher chose the novel The Boy in The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. This research looks for changes after the novel is adapted into a movie and reveals the motivation behind the adaptation and the alteration. For the changed, the researcher focused on the events. With this, the researcher formulates the research problem as 1) How is the alteration of events described inthe novel and film adaptation? and 2) What is the motivation behind the adaptation of the movie?. This research applied intertextuality theory and Linda Hutcheon's theory about adaptation. Using this theory, the researcher analyzed the adaptation of the novel The Boy in The Striped Pajamas as a work that changed from the TellingShowing form. The research results showed there were changes in the events, the celebration party scene, Maria's family background, Bruno's Grandmother's past, Shmuel's family details, conversations about Nazi symbols and Jews, propaganda videos, and Bruno's fate at the end, and camp concentration name from Out-With to Countryside. This research also showed that the self-interest of the director and producer was one reason for adapting the novel into movies.
