Abstract

Recognizing students’ learning style is essential to address the students’ needs in learning. This information helps teachers select appropriate materials and assesment that can maximize their potentials. This is because students may have different ways or learning style to understand the materials effectively. The current study aims to identify the learning styles and the strategy that high achieving students use in comprehending reading texts. This study used quantitative study by administering questionnaire to 31 students and interviewing 3 students. The finding indicated that high achieving students used three different learning styles, namely visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. From the three larning style, the majority of them prefered to use visual learning style. The finding also indicated that high achieving students developed their reading comprehension by applying SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Reciten, and Review) reading strategy. SQ3R strategy helped them to understand and process the information of English texts easily. This finding highlights the importance of understanding students learning styles in developing reading comprehension, and teachers should be aware of the students’ learning styles.
