Abstract

This study analyzes the Decoding of Trevor Noah and Jim Jefferies' dark jokes stand up comedy. The theory used in this research is the theory of reception analysis by Stuart Hall (1973). In addition, researchers used transcripts of dark jokes stand up comedy content on the Trevor Noah and Jim Jefferies channel as data in the study. Besides that, the researcher used the focus group discussion (FGD) method. This study consisted of two discussion problems: (1) How did Trevor Noah and Jim Jefferies constructed encoding dark jokes stand up comedy on Youtube? (2) How do respondents decoding to Trevor Noah and Jim Jefferies' dark jokes? This researcher uses a qualitative descriptive research method because this researcher analyzes the encoding and decoding of comics by Trevor Noah and Jim Jefferies, and this research is in the form of FGDs assisted by four respondents and one moderator to obtain decoding hypothetical position results. Based on the Decoding analysis, the researcher found the results of the interpretation of the three hypothetical positions, namely 10 the hegemonic position, 6 negotiated position and 4 oppositional position. In this study, the background and insight of the respondents greatly influenced their interpretation of dark jokes stand up comedy which is divided into these hypothetical positions.
