Abstract
This thesis focused on the conflicts faced by Catherine Summer in Kevin Emerson’s novel: Encore to an Empty Room. This thesis uses new criticism theory to analyze the characterization, the conflicts, and the effect of the conflicts. This thesis aims to describe plot presented in the novel and find out the external and internal conflict faced by Catherine Summer and the effect of the conflicts for Catherine Summer. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative research method and library based-on because data collected are organized depending on the researcher and how the data were rendered through the library source. As the result of this research, the researcher depicts Catherine Summer’s character in the novel Encore to an Empty Room, a young woman, a kind, optimist person. Reveal how the plot presented in the novel.Then, the writer finds out the conflict faced by Catherine. Catherine met two external conflicts: the first is conflicts that happen within her band. The second is a conflict with her band member's family. Not only facing external conflict but also faced two internal conflicts: first is a conflict with herself, second is a conflict with her past. Not only focused on the conflict faced by Catherine but in this research also finds out the effect of the conflicts for Catherine.
