Abstract

This research aims to analyze the flouting of maxims in the novel's main character utterances and the strategies of flouting the maxims. There are two problems to be solved in this study: (1) what are the types of maxims flouted by the main character in the "Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties" novel? and (2) what are the strategies of maxims flouted used by the main character in the "Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties" novel? To uncover the problems of the study, the researcher used Gricean's implicature theory to find the flouting of maxims and used Grundy's theory to find the strategies of flouting the maxims. The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method to conduct the research. The data of this study is in the form of words, phrases, and sentences produced by Maggie in the novel. To collect the data, the researcher takes three steps first, download the novel; second, the researcher reads the novel to comprehend the plot; then, the researcher focuses and highlights the data that contains the flouting of maxims and the strategies of flouting the maxims. The researcher classified the data in a table and then described the data based on the formulated framework. This study reveals that the main character flouts all maxims. These are flouting the maxim of quantity, flouting the maxim of quality, flouting the maxim of manner, and flouting the maxim of relevance. The researcher also finds the strategies of maxims flouted used by the main character of the novel. Those are an understatement, overstatement, irony, rhetorical question, metaphor, and tautology.
