Conversation repair strategies in the informal debate of Vice YouTube channel

This thesis examines repair strategies in informal debates on the official VICE YouTube channel. The study's research questions: (1) What types of conversational repair strategies are used by the participants in informal debates on the VICE YouTube channel? (2) What is the function of conversational techniques of other-initiated repair used by the participants in informal debates on the VICE YouTube channel? This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher collected the data by transcribing the debate conversations on one of the VICE YouTube channel videos. Then, the researcher analyzed the types of repairs and the function of conversational techniques of other-initiated repair. After that, the researcher classified the identified data to determine the types of repairs and the function of conversational techniques of other-initiated repair uttered by the participants in the informal debate. As a result, the researcher found four types of repairs used by the participants in the informal debate. The researcher found 33 utterances containing types of repair strategies spoken by the debate participants. The participants mostly uttered self-initiated self-repair with twelve utterances, other-initiated other-repair with eight utterances, self-initiated other-repair with four utterances, and other-initiated self-repair with four utterances. Furthermore, the researcher found two functions of repair, namely recycling and replacing. The researcher also found four conversational techniques of other-initiated repair: use particles and expression, abruptly stop speaking, asking questions, and repeat part of the utterance. As a result, the researcher found 33 utterances containing the function of conversational techniques of other-initiated repair spoken by the participants of the informal debate.
