Language Style of Pre-Service and in-Service English Teachers

Language is the key to communication and there are various styles of languages. When teaching English in the classroom, teachers’ choice of style of language gives a big impact to students’ comprehension. The aim of this research is to investigate the language style of pre-service and in-service English teachers’. It is assumed that pre-service and in-service English teachers may have different language styles due to different teaching experience and knowledge. The instruments are observation checklist, video, and transcript. From 20 utterances by Pre-Service teachers there are 12 utterances used casual style, 4 utterances used consultative style, 3 utterances used formal style, and 1 utterance used intimate style. Data from the in-service teachers, from 19 utterances there are 9 utterances used casual style, 6 utterances used formal style, 2 utterances used consultative style, and 2 utterances used intimate style. Both pre-service and In-Service Teachers used casual style the most between the other styles of language. But the different thing is their second most used style of language. For pre-service teachers they used consultative style a lot after casual style and for in-service teachers they used formal style the most after casual style. It can be concluded that casual style is the most common style of language used by pre-service and in-service English teachers. Hence, teaching experience may not influence the style used in teaching of English.
