Abstract

This research was intended to investigate the military jargon used by United States First Reconnaissance Marines in Generation Kill miniseries. The researcher uses four theoretical frameworks based on Akmajian’s et al jargon theory (2001), Brown and Attardo’s jargon function theory (2000), Hurford’s meaning theory (2007) and Saeed’s meaning theory (2016). This research focus on the following problems: (1) kinds of jargon are used by the First Reconnaissance Marine in Generation Kill miniseries. (2) The meanings of the jargon used by the First Reconnaissance Marine in Generation Kill miniseries.(3)The functions of the jargon used by the First Reconnaissance Marine in Generation kill miniseries.The researcher investigates the types of military jargon before describing the meaning of military jargon used in Generation Kill. The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method and discovers the fact of investigating military jargon in Generation Kill through the characters' utterances who represent the First Reconnaissance Marine. The results show there are 82 military jargon appears in the miniseries. The researcher found four types of military jargon used by the First Reconnaissance Marine in the Generation Kill miniseries. The type of military jargon appears in Generation Kill are: the number-based jargon, abbreviated jargon, phrases jargon, and, word jargon. Based on its meaning, there are two types of meaning, literal meaning and non-literal meaning. Most of the jargon have a non-literal meaning. Several jargon that has non-literal meaning. Based on its function, the military jargon used in Generation Kill has two main functions: Provides efficient communication and, stands as an identity marker
