Abstract
This research discusses the language style used by the main character in “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” movie by Scott Derrickson. This research aims to represent the kinds of language style used by the main character in The Exorcism of Emily Rose movie and to discover the social factors that affect the main character through the conversation. The writer applied content analysis and descriptive research. The data are taken from the utterances of the main character in “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” movie. The main theory to analyze the data taken from Martin Joos book “The Styles of Five O’Clock” (1976). The researcher becomes the main instrument of this research. The process of data collection includes reading and selecting the whole movie scripts for “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”. The data analysis techniques then include identifying, classifying, and interpreting the data. The final step is to draw a conclusion. As the result of this research, the researcher found ninety-one data, which includes language style. The researcher found four types of language styles. The styles are frozen style found two data, and the formal style found forty-six data, the consultative style found twenty-nine data, and the casual style found fourteen data. The most language style used by the main character is formal style. There are also social aspects that have an impact on the main character through the use of the speaking component, which includes Setting, Topic, Participant, and Function.
