Abstract
Some students at school have special need in developing their language competence, one of which is Slow Learners. Slow Learner is a group of students in the school education development is slower compared to the average development of friends her age. So, they need special education services in their language competence. In learning English, assessment is one of the important tools to measure the ability of students in junior high school. The teacher has a good strategy that used in teaching Slow Learners. The purposes of this research are: (1) to describe the assessment of what the teacher uses for Slow Learners Students. (2) to find out the assessment strategies used by teachers for Slow Learners. This research used qualitative method. This research was conducted on seven grade students and the English teacher of SMP Negeri 5 Surabaya. The findings in this study are show that teachers use three ways to provide assessments for Slow Learners namely using short texts, lowering the level of questions, and using direct feedback. In addition, the three teachers used strategies in assessment in the form of imitation, giving clues, and giving two options in choosing answers. This strategy has many advantages for students and teachers in teaching Slow Learners. First, this strategy can increase student confidence and motivation. Second, students felt easy to do assessments.
