Language Sign In Sidoarjo Government Service Building

This research aims to analyze the language sign found in the government service building in Sidoarjo. The researcher is interested in investigating the Language used by the Sidoarjo government because, as far as the researcher knows, it is very little that research on the linguistic landscape makes use of government building facilities as the main study. Moreover, no study focuses on examining government service buildings. There are two problems to be solved in this research, namely: (1) What are the languages used by the Sidoarjo government service building (2) What are the categories of signs that the Sidoarjo government service building used. This research used a qualitative approach because it gathered non-numerical data. This examination utilized descriptive exploration in the printed investigation to dissect the language signs used and their type. The data were collected by first taking some pictures of signs in the Sidoarjo government service building. The analysis began with highlighting the languages used and its type, such as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, classifying them into a table and analyzing each type of sign. By the end of this research, the researcher found only two languages: Indonesian and English. Those languages are presented in two kinds of language types; monolingual and bilingual. Indonesian has the highest percentage of English. It makes Indonesian became a dominant language used as the language signs in government service building in Sidoarjo. The researcher also categorize the languages signs into five categories; Direction sign, cautioning sign, place name, information sign, guideline sign.
