Abstract

In communication, we cannot avoid disagreement when we have different idea or opinion from our interlocutor. By doing disagreement, we may offend our interlocutor. So we must realize that we need strategy to express disagreement appropriately in order to establish a good communication with others. The writer is interested to observe disagreement in the film Karate Kid which tells about Dre Parker in opposing his scared of bullying from prodigy kungfu. She analyzes what types of disagreement strategy and in what context Dre Parker utters disagreement toward his interlocutors.
This research is qualitative research that the writer describes the data from the conversation of Dre Parker toward his interlocutors. The writer analyzes disagreement utterances done by Dre Parker toward his interlocutors based on Muntigl and Turnbull theory. She finds that the types of disagreement used by Dre Parker are contradiction, counterclaim and contradiction followed by counterclaim. Then the writer describes the context of disagreement utterances by using context of situation based on Hyme’s theory. She uses four features of situation context; participants, setting, topic, and event in her research.
