A STUDY OF LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS USED BY ALICIA AND DR. ROSEN IN “A BEAUTIFUL MIND” MOVIE

communication with John Nash as schizophrenia sufferer. The writer wants to find out the kinds of language functions used by Alicia and dr. Rosen in the movie and to describes language functions are mostly used by Alicia and dr. Rosen that found.
This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. It is categorized as discourse analysis because this study analyzed phenomena of talk in interaction.
The data are collected from the language used by Alicia and dr. Rosen when talk to John who suffer schizophrenia diseases and those are analyzed by using Roman
Jakobson (1960) theory on language functions.
The result of this study shows that there are several language functions that used by Alicia and dr. Rosen in talking to John who suffer schizophrenia in A Beautiful Mind movie. They are; referential function, conative function, phatic function, expressive function and metalingual function. Referential function is most dominant kind of language functions that used by Alicia and dr. Rosen in doing verbal communication with John Nash who suffer schizophrenia in the movie with forty five utterances used. Conative function used in twenty four
utterances, phatic function used in eighteen utterances, expressive function used in sixteen utterances, and metalingual function used only in two utterances by Alicia
and dr. Rosen. They are can be effectively used by Alicia and dr. Rosen because John who schizophrenia can give response whether good or bad response in A Beautiful Mind movie.
