THE USE OF HEDGES BY REBECCA BLOOMWOOD AND LUKE BRANDON IN “CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC” MOVIE

Hedges are linguistic expressions which are used by speaker to soften or express doubtful about statement. Every human sometimes does not realize that they use hedges spontaneous with different function to avoid meaningless. There are seven types of hedges that are composed by Salager-Meyer. Besides that, Coates summarized the functions of hedges into five types. The objective of this research is to identify the types of hedges and to find out the functions of hedges used by Rebecca Bloomwood and Luke Brandon in “Confessions of a Shopaholic” movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. The data of this research is all utterances that consist of hedges produced by Rebecca Bloomwood and Luke Brandon in “Confessions of a Shopaholic” movie. As the result of analysis the data, the researcher make some conclusion of the types of hedges found in the finding, the most used by Rebecca and Luke is modal auxiliary. However, the function of hedges Rebecca used hedges to expression of doubt, and Luke Brandon used hedges for expression of confidence, he used showed higher degree of confidence. Holmes said that women used hedges to express uncertainty. The finding shows that Rebecca Bloomwood and Luke Brandon used hedges to reveal the relationship between them to make became closer. The researcher considers hedges are very important in speaking. People who speak can use hedges to make statement and it makes do communication more smoothly. Then, for the next researcher can analyze other material subject more widely about hedges.
