POSITIVE POLITENESS STRATEGY USED BY KATNISS EVERDEEN IN THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE

Based on the importance of positive politeness in communication, the researcher intends to analyze how positive politeness strategy used by Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie. It is conducted to find out the kinds and purpose of positive politeness strategy employed by Katniss Everdeen and also to investigate the factors influencing Katniss Everdeen applying those strategy in
relation to Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategy.
This research deals with pragmatics approach. It is descriptive qualitative study. The data are all the dialogs containing positive politeness strategy used by
Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie. There are 19 data found in the movie. The data are then analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s positive politeness strategy deals with statements of problem. The result of this research shows that there are 11 strategy of positive politeness employed by Katniss Everdeen in the dialogs of The Hunger Games movie. Each strategy has different
purposes. There are two factors influencing Katniss Everdeen on choosing positive politeness strategy. Those are payoff and circumstances. The payoff factor entirely influences Katniss in all the data. The circumstances factors, including relative power, social distance, and size of imposition, influence Katniss in several data.
Finally, the researcher expects this research will be useful for future researcher who conducts for the same field. It is suggested to further researchers to be able to investigate other objects and may try to analyze from different focus, such as focus on negative politeness, bald on record or off record strategy or use another principal theory of politeness such as politeness theory from Leech, Grice, Scollon or Lakoff.
