Abstract
This thesis examines a linguistic landscape of state school and private school in Surabaya. The aims of this study is to find out if the different status of school can affect the use of LL. There are two selected sites to conduct this study: SMPN 6 Surabaya as the representation of state school and SMP Kristen Logos as the representation of private school. The researcher applies the theory from Spolsky and Cooper to analyze the linguistic landscape according to the language used in the sign and according to the function of the signs. The researcher also conducts an interview with the headmaster of each school as the decision-maker in the school level. The researcher uses two instruments: observation and interview. Thus, the research report suggests that the different status of state school and private school is contributed in the differences of both school in using LL. There are five languages found among those selected sites. Those languages are Indonesian language, English, Arabic, Javanese, and Greek. Six types are provided to categorize the LL: direction signs, advertising signs, warning notices and prohibitions, building names, informative signs, and instructions. Furthermore, the functions of LL for students are as motivation, the form of hopes from school to students, for the media for communication, information, creating a culture, and socialization.
