Abstract

This research is analyzed Andy Weir novel entitled The Martian and focuses on the main character named Mark Watney. Mark Watney tries to survive because he is stranded on Mars and abandoned by the other crew, thought that Mark is dead. Then dealing with the issue above, this research analyzes with Abraham H. Maslow’s theory, Hierarchy of needs. With this theory, the researcher deals with how the main character fulfilling his needs during his survival act on Mars. Maslow’s theory classified into 5 levels and sequentially from lowest needs to highest needs. the needs are physiological needs, safety needs, belonging needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. This research applies the descriptive qualitative method in conducting the research. The data are analyzed by reading, understanding, and identifying. From lowest to highest needs, the main character gets different obstacle especially at the belonging and esteem needs. But the big desire guides him through all of those needs. Then, at his self-actualization, the main character survived and returned to Earth. In a nutshell, the main character must fulfil his lowest needs first then the highest needs to survive.
