Abstract

This research intended to reveal politeness strategies of representative act in discussion forum Indonesia Lawyer Club (ILC). The study of speech act was closely related to the concept of argumentation in the utterances of the speaker. In context of argument, speakers needed to carefullly spread their utterances to extend their intended meaning. The purpose of the study was to know what types of politeness strategies in accompanying representative act. The theory focused on Searle (1967) representative act and Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness strategies. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Based on Creswell (1994) and Surakhmad (1994) can be concluded that descriptive qualitative is a kinds of techniques of searching, classifying and analyzing data in holistic picture, formed with words and reporting detailed. The finding shown that audiences of discussion forum Indonesia Lawyer Club (ILC) conducted politeness strategies in doing representative act. There are three types of politeness strategies that was accompanying representative act; positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies and bald on record strategies. The utterance use politeness strategies when speaker predict the future act and hearer condition to accept their utterance.
