The grammar competence of the eighth semester students of English Education Department at state Institute for Islamic Studies Sunan Ampel Surabaya

This research is aimed to describe the real grammar competence of the eighth semester students of English Education Department, know the weaknesses of using grammar of the eighth semester students English Education department and find out the problems that the eighth semester students of English Education department face when they practice speaking english with many oral grammatical errors. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative as the design of this research. Then the data is arranged by doing several data collection techniques. They are observation, recording documentary, interview and questionnaire. The result of this research shows that the students are frequent in making error of using grammar form in sentences when they spoke english in the class. In contrast, they had good capability in controlling their grammar use and in using structural accuracy when they spoke english in the class. The researcher concludes that the grammar competence of the eighth semester students of English Education Department is moderate.
