Abstract
This article discusses about characteristic and ideological orientation of Islamic movement. As a social religious phenomena there are many Islamic movements emerged in the middle and modern era. All Islamic movements are certain to have characteristic and ideological movement as base in their struggle. These characteristics and ideological orientation of Islamic movements can be different between one and the others. But in general, idealize Islamic rulings and concrete examples of Muslims’ life in the early Islam as the orientation of their movement. However, they differ in focusing their own ideological orientation, for example revivalism, Puritanism, and Islamism. While revivalism gives emphasis on religious and political aspects, puritanism merely on religious facets (especially theology and rituals), and Islamism to Islam as an ideology for all aspects of life. In a particular reference to Islamism, this ideology necessitates the so-called Islamization of knowledge and science.
