The masculinity of Henchard in Thomas Hardy's the mayor of casterbridge

This study tries to find out the masculinity whichare possesed by Michael Henchard in Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge. Masculinity is a man identity which should owned by every man. This study focuses on Masculinity which admitted by the society according to the novel. So, this research conducts to know the characterization of Michael Henchard in Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge and to know what kind of masculinity which are possessed by Michael Henchard. This Study uses descriptive-qualitative method in order to describe Henchard’s personality and to portray Henchard’s masculinity. The data collected by closed reading and then classifying it into several characterization of Henchard. The result of the study is that there are two points; first, Henchard possess many characterizations such as brave, economic independent, labile, and tricky. Some of his characterizations include in masculinity which become second point of discussion, masculine personality. In this second point, the masculinity of Henchard is added by his physical appearance which really manly. The conclusion of the study is there are six masculine personality and masculine appearance which are possessed by Henchard. Those areviolent, nomadic, economic independent, heterosexual, having power and brave.
