Abstract

This study focuses on Nabia Abbott's theory about writing .hadith in early Islam and explosive increase of isnad. The significance of this study is to correct and counter Western scholars 'misunderstandings', like Goldziher, about his scepticism in the authenticity of i)adith. For instance, Goldziher said that fladiths material have been forged by the latter Companions to justify the later material of Hadiths. In attempt to counter Goldziher' s scepticism, Abbot argues that collection of padith was begun in Muhammad's lifetime by members of his family, clients, and close Companions. While several of his secretaries recorded his recitation of the Qur'an, others attended to his state correspondence. His administrators preserved the documents. They kept written records of .{Jadith until the time Hadiths were compiled in the canonical collection. She also noted that the phenomenal growth of padith is not due to growth in content (that is fabrication of padith) but due to progressive increase in the parallel and mi1.1ltiple chains of transmission (isnad). Abbott and Goldziher' s theory is a basic for renewal premises of their contemporaries. Their theories have inspired much comment, commendation, corroboration, and criticism. The corroboration of Abbott's theory appears from many scholars, such as Fuat Segzin, MM. Azami, and M. Hamidullah whom in many ways they have resembled evidences of Abbott. However their arguments are the unconvincing argument for their co1Jntepart. G.H.A. Juynboll noted that they seem to rely too heavily on much of the infonnation given in isniids and in books about isniid concerning the three oldest fllbqat. On the other hand, their arguments seem too contrived and circular. Because there was no guarantee that the common link of each text will not fabricate their riwiiyah. In thi point is fascinating step to see what have noted by Harald Motzki about the authenticity of !fllbifah Abd ar-Razz.aq. With historical-tradition approach, Motzki successes to prove that $Qpifah Abd ar-Razzaq is a reliable early text.Motzki's argument to refute scepticism of the authenticity of fladith takes from several samples of /ladiths material in Sahifah Abd ar-Razzaq which have transmitted by lbn Jurayj. Motzki's arguments are; I) Involution of transmission riiwi notes its reliable; 2) Variety of transmission types, difference of transmitter link, variety of transmission material between the Prophet, Companions, or Tobi 7n, and variety of transmission terminology assume there is no projection to the authority of transmitter; 3) Anonymous padiths refute scepticism in the authenticity of fladi th; 4) Rawf s claim that he was hesitant to the authenticity of J;iadith or isnad and reveal the lack of extrinsic and intrinsic formal criteria of authenticity corroborate the reliable of isnad.
