An analysis of maxim violation used by fletcher reede in liar liar movie

This research aimed to find the maxim violation used by Fletcher Reede as the main character in Liar Liar movie. The data of this research were all Fletcher Reede’s utterances. Researcher used a qualitative research method to support the analysis. The purpose of this research are to investigate the types of maxim violations that used by the main character in Liar Liar movie and to investigate the reasons the main character violated the maxim by using Christifferson’s criteria of lying. Based on the analysis, researcher found 14 utterances which are categorized into maxim violations. Those are 5 violations of quality maxim, 5 violations of quantity maxim, 3 violations of relation maxim and 1 violation of manner maxim. There are seven reasons the main character violated the maxim. Those are hiding the truth, cheering the hearer, saving face, avoiding hurt the hearer, feeling jealous, convincing the hearer and building someone’s belief.
