Directive speech acts performed by the main character “Thomas” and the character’s responses in the Maze Runner (2014) movie

This research entitled “Directive Speech Acts Performed by The Main Character “Thomas” and The Character’s Responses in The Maze Runner (2014) Movie. This research reveals the problem. They are what are the types of directive acts performed by the main character Thomas and what are the types of preference structure that used by the characters toward Thomas’s directive speech acts. The aims of this research to describe the types of directive speech acts performed by the main character Thomas and to describe the preference structure from the character toward the directive speech acts uttered by Thomas. The writer uses Searle’s theory in analyzing the types of directive speech and uses the preference structure by Yule in analyzing the types of preference structure that used by the character. The method of the study was qualitative method. The researcher herself becomes the only instrument - human instrument. The steps of data collection are reading and selecting the movie script. Then, identifying, classifying and describing the data becomes the technique of data analysis. The data was taken from the movie script and some scene from the movie. Drawing the conclusion becomes the last step required. The result of this research is Thomas uses 199 utterances of directive speech acts in The Maze Runner (2014) Movie, they are advice, command, order, question and order. The question type becomes the biggest frequency among the all features. Moreover, there are also 82 utterance performed by the character toward Thomas’s directive speech acts belongs to preference structure, which are 33 utterances includes in preffered acts and 49 utterances includes in dispreffered acts.
