Abstract

In terms of Islamic architecture design, a design has put women in high positions. This can be proven with many literature on traditional architecture that uses the size of the female body as a basis in determining the size of an area of the room. In fact there are textual data contained in the Quran or Hadith. An expression of appreciation for women have been very commonplace we meet in everyday life. For example, the phrase that Heaven under the soles of the feet. Another form that is perhaps not much known to the public at large is a form of appreciation that is manifested in the form of material, especially in Islamic architecture. For example, in the land of the Arab Islamic society's birthplace, people distinguish between the space for women (harem) and men's room. In the area of Indonesia has several areas set difference areas for women and men, for example by limiting the mast or the floor. In the traditional architecture of the Bugis-Makassar there is room to sleep with the girl child's function room depicting the safeguards such as the size of the wall height is equal to the size of the girl child as high ears stand tall size added with the girl child at the time when sitting. In Cairo, Egypt, on housing buildings made of wood, its walls made filigree ornaments that allows light and air into the room. At the top, where women are depicted in special boxes specifically allowing women look out through a hole carved wood without visible from the outside. For what is the difference? Whether to restrict women's movement? If understood in depth, of course this is done to protect women from strangers who do not like to see them. Avoiding negative actions that can be experienced by women. Therefore, it is interesting to observe all if product architecture in society by making writing that discusses the role of women in architecture, especially in determining the area of the room. The purpose of this writing is to see to what extent women's contribution in the formation of architecture in General and architectural styles in particular. This study discusses the role of women in the concept of interconnectedness of Islamic architecture. Analytical methods used are descriptive analysis interpretation. The results of this research are expected to be able to show that there are values in the context of the provisions of the local wisdom utilization of space in the House, as a form of emancipation, participation, and the existence of gender roles in preserving the culture and societal relationships. With the digging values local wisdom is still relevant in the pattern of life interpreted social cultural community was expected to be supporting the maintenance and preservation of the Islamic concept of home living.
