In the Madura culture, self-esteem is a value mechanism for solving problems and difficulties that Madura faces well and properly from a cultural standpoint. The study aims to find, to unravel, to find, to define, and to describe the value of self-esteem and its articulation in the lives and traditions of Madura people. In this study we will discuss the dimensions of self-esteem that Madura people base upon acting and actualizing everyday. The study in the dissertation seeks to address the problem as follows: 1) how the meaning self-esteem as a principle of value in Madura's society? 2) how is the actualization of Madura society's self-respect in the modern era? This kind of research is qualitative research with a sociological approach. In the context of this research, a qualitative approach aims to reveal the meaning of the values embodied in the behaviour, language, habits, symbols, and traditions of the Madura society. Relevant theories are phenomenology and symbolic interactionism. The intent of a sociological paradigm is a social definition, which recognizes individual subjective understanding. Each of the social actions of the individual are assumed to be related to his rationality. The study found that: 1) For Madura people, self-esteem means as a ultimate and core value that becomes the foundation for all aspects of life. All variants of tradition and culture were displayed by the dimensional Madura society of self-esteem. But the Madura's self-esteem shows more individuality than the collective, emphasizing the aspects of internal competition "into" (the excitement of one individual against another individual). Madura's self-esteem has not yet become a collective spirit to fight a common threat. There was a shift in the meaning of self-esteem marked by the presence of traditional (old) self-esteem symbols, replaced by new self-esteem symbols as a result of changing times. Moreover, the change in self-esteem based on a competition between actors to be dominated by one actor over another. Self-esteem as a value has not changed because of time, but its symbolic system has changed. Following the reformation, the rise of strata kiai and the waning of other social status.
