Abstract

This thesis is conducted to analyze the novel written by Bram Stoker entitled Dracula. This novel tells about Jonathan Harker who struggle to prevent Dracula killing people in Transylvania. This study focuses on the one main character, Jonathan Harker, his defense mechanism and how he shows it. Hopefully, this study will be useful for the readers especially for students of English Department who takes the same field.
The method of the study is descriptive qualitative because this study is to explain defense mechanism of Jonathan Harker in the novel Dracula. The data is taken from the novel itself. The writer uses the theory of Sigmund Freud about defense mechanism as primary theory and use new criticism as secondary theory to conduct this study. There are six types of defense mechanism; they are rationalization, suppression, denial, repession, and regression. The data itself is analyzed by reading, understanding and identifying its novel.
By this study, the writer finds that Jonathan Harker uses rationalization, suppression, denial, regression and repression. Jonathan Harker performs his defense mechanism to release his anger and their frustration or it can be called as negative emotion. Finally, he use defense mechanism in many ways.
