In teaching and learning processes we have to master both oral and written English because those components have relationship each other and the four skills of English can not be separated. In order to make the students feel comfortable when they learn English the teacher should have techniques that make them optimally cooperate each other and learn the material. So that the aim of teaching and learning is reached. This thesis specifically discusses about improving students’ writing skill by cooperative games at the first year of SMA HANG TUAH 2 SIDOARJO. The researcher focuses on the X/10 class. Based on the progress of their writing it was raise up although it was not maximally, but the most important thing that they can interact each other when they finish their work. Students who had understood about the material could help the other students that did nothing in their group. In these cooperative games no one becomes winner and loser because they had the same goal in finishing the work together and had the same understanding. The researcher did this research to answer the research question that state in his thesis (1) How are Cooperative Games implemented in teaching writing skill in the first grade of SMA HANG TUAH 2 SIDOARJO ? (2) How are the students’ responses after cooperative games technique are implemented? (3)How is the classrooms’ atmosphere when cooperative games are implemented? (4)How is the progress of the students writing ability after cooperative games are implemented? In this research, the researcher used collaborative classroom action research to find out and to measure the students’ writing ability after implementing the cooperative games. It was done by using questionnaire, observation check list and students score in every cycle. Based on the question number 5 that they like cooperative games very much was about 13.33% and they like cooperative games was 64,44%. Besides that, based on the question number 20 there were 33,33% answered need to continuo cooperative games very much, and 55,55% need to continuo the cooperative games. Based on the explanation above the researcher concludes that cooperative games improve the students’ writing ability.
