Abstract

Timeline is a visual media that can be used in teaching and learning process, especially in learning tenses. It is a great way to illustrate tenses and time expression. Thus, timeline used to show the particular language items (often a verb in a particular tense and aspect) places particular events or situation in time and in relation to other events. Using of timeline that completed with the line, time and picture, so the students can be easier to understand and remember concept of tenses. The objective of study was to find out whether timeline media is effective to improve students’ grammar ability in simple past tense and find out the response of students on using timeline media. In this study, the researcher used quasi experimental method. The population of this study was eight grade of MTs Negeri 2 Surabaya. The researcher took two classes as the sample: VIII F as the experimental group and VIII G as the control group. The instrument of this research are test, consist pre and post- test and questionnaire. The writer use T-test to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that the result of statistic calculation where the value to = 8.88 is higher than ttable = 2.00, it means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The result of questionnaire also showed that the responses of students on using timeline in teaching simple past tense is very good where the result of questionnaire percentage is 79.4%. Therefore, it can be concluded that timeline media is effective to improve students’ grammar ability in simple past tense to the eight grade students in MTs Negeri 2 Surabaya.
