Abstract

Speaking is a skill that is usually regarded as difficult to teach through the use of computer. Although there are aspects of speaking that have been the subject of a number of studies in recent years, such as pronunciation and vowel contrasts, studies that focus on speaking itself as a skill have not featured heavily in the literature. As far as CALL is concerned, it is advantageous to consider speaking and the computer in three ways: tasks that require the learners to speak, tasks that peripherally assist the skills required the computer to recognize and respond to language input. The benefit for oral proficiency are obvious, because the learner is directly involved in the act of speaking with teachers, native speakers, or other learners. Based on explanation above, the researcher carried out the observation that was done in the SMP A1 Hikmah, and the subjects of this study were eight grade of SBI. The researcher want to know about what a materials are uses in the implementation of CALL in speaking, and how the implementation of CALL in teaching speaking at classroom. The instruments used to collect the data were document study, observation guide, field note, questionnaires, and photographs. All the data gained from instruments collected. The researcher then analyzed the data, in which the researcher explained the data in descriptive explanation. The next step done by the researcher was describing the research findings. The finding in the research, the selection and determination of CALL materials used by teacher in implementation of CALL in speaking is important. Nevertheless, CALL materials are not main material of English lesson because it is not included in syllabus of grade 8 SBI. In fact, almost of students do not feel difficult with the materials. CALL implemented in every English lesoon meeting. The teacher insert CALL in each English lesson activities, such as opening activity, main activity and clossing activity. The teacher teach speaking uses controlled-drill technique and uses individual technique when the teacher give exercise to students. Finally, based on the data, the researcher concludes that this method gives useful contribution to the speaking skill. This study suggests that using CALL in teaching speaking recommended in the future.
