Abstract

Due to the technological advancement in teaching and learning, schools have been advocating considerable amount of their funds for preparing implementation of technology in education. In recent years, E-leaming system has become more and more popular, and many adaptive learning environments have been proposed. The learners are then offered customized courses in accordance with their aptitude and learning result E-learning improves students' productivity to get knowledge and helps teacher to present the materials. Developing and integrating technology in education make teachers are able to prepare some tools which help them in teaching learning process. This study focuses on the implementation of E-learning in the teaching of English at SMP Negeri 4 Surabaya. The subject in this study is students at grade seven of SMP Negeri 4 Surabaya. The study finds that the school begins to implement E-learning in English teaching in order to make English learning easier and faster. Teacher presents certain materials such as grammar, vocabulary and listening using technology. Those materials can also be downloaded by the students in school website and other websites which are suggested by the teacher. Teacher gives some materials in presentation form (Microsoft power point) and uses offiine authoring tool. In this case, teacher uses Hot potatoes which are relatively easy for students to get the materials. E-learning provides many advantages for students and teacher. Leaming could be done everywhere and anytime by students. Teaching process can be through computer and internet connection. Although E- assessment has not applied yet in this school, the tools are already prepared. To apply E-learning and E-assessment together in the same time needs well preparation; hence, this school provides E-learning first followed by E-assessment next year. The students give positive responses to implementation of E-learning in this school. The students feel enthusiastic and enjoy the process because they can learn and get new experiences in the same time. E-learning allows them to learn from authentic sources independently and closely with the real world.
